California's Governor States He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run
Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he will determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.
"Yeah, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor commented when asked about contemplating a campaign for president following the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
The governor's tenure as California's leader wraps up in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he cautioned that any decision is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he added.
Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic
The California governor has come to the forefront as a high-profile adversary of the Trump administration, leveraging his social media accounts and pushing a proposition that would boost Democratic representation in Congress in following redistricting by Republicans. This move has drawn criticism from adversaries.
Clash on Transportation
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor does not care about Californians in a weekend interview on Fox News. The secretary revealed plans to pull taxpayer dollars from the state and warned revoking the power to grant CDLs.
"I intend to cut $160m from the state," he declared, after a this week's deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that led to fatalities and injured individuals.
His administration highlighted that the national authorities had renewed the driver's employment repeatedly, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
Duffy had previously stated he was withholding $40m from California for ignoring language proficiency rules for truck drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office
"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp national statutes," his administration retorted in a previous comment addressing Duffy's threats. "For now, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: California CDL holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."
Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations
A recent poll found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters said that the governor should run for president in the next election cycle. In recent years, public support for the governor has increased to an mean of a third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an average of previous highs to under 40%.
In previous months, Newsom commented while visiting several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He noted his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.
"The notion that a guy who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, remarkable," he commented. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in the next election and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
