His journey began in Wiltshire in 1931, leading to a role as a pioneering broadcaster who shared classical music with the public.
In the mid-20th century, he held the position of the BBC's head of music and arts and won accolades for landmark programmes like The Golden Ring.
He also launched the Young Musician of the Year competition in 1978, a showcase that discovered talents such as violinist Nicola Benedetti.
