Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Warriors Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a colorful mix of heroes, and a exciting storyline including celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces increasing in strength within the urban setting.

Warning: Spoilers for the latest installment of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

The latest chapter ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the premier party of characters who will split off from the central cast to embark on their independent quest, apart from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table consists of the determined fighter (played by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), Tyranny (the cast member), the cleric (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

With a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that keeping everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, connecting the individual narratives before branching into three distinct groups: Fighters, Schemers, and Explorers.

What Defines the Warrior Group

Per the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for participants who enjoy a classically intense fight-heavy gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are few and far between.

Initially, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might look out of place, but the events of the latest installment demonstrate why these five characters are best suited for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal first encounter with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose passing started the campaign’s events—exploited The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the character, and swiping all the enchanted items to sell off.

The traitor then paid off his debts and escaped to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, above the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each member has a individual motive to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, seeks revenge.
  • Kattigan has experience in Timmony and advises that it is a nasty place.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to execute Teor and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could help the group enter locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, Teor pledged a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his salvation and will now follow him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are sought by the powers that govern Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and Wicander turned against House Halovar and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • Teor is marked for death by the family.

This leaves them little choice but to journey toward Timmony in pursuit of the traitor.

Future Episodes

Based on the latest episode’s post-show segment, we learn that the warrior group will not appear the following episode, leaving the rest of the participants to assemble the Explorers and Schemers groups.

Audiences can anticipate discovering which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, released on October 24.
