Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the gesture was entirely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate net worth of around $16bn, making the penalty easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.
