Igor Jesus scored twice as the Premier League side rounded off the league phase of the Europa League with a convincing win against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

Forest had already secured a berth in the next qualifying round and went into this game with a slim possibility of reaching the league's elite, even though they required other matches to fall in their favor.

Those results failed to materialize but this confident display will give Forest fans confidence that their side can navigate the home-and-away tie to advance to the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder struck the post with a header inside the opening stages for the away team – coached by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from then on.

Forest broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when Ryan Yates' cross was turned into his own net by the defender and doubled the lead shortly after – the striker firing an effort in at the far post for his 10th goal of the season.

The forward's eleventh goal came early in the second half when he timed a run perfectly to break clear of the defence and then drive an effort beyond the shot-stopper.

The third strike ended the visitors' aspirations of mounting a recovery and instead the hosts scored again when the excellent James McAtee converted a penalty after a infringement by the hapless Bence Otvos inside the box on the winger.

Europe's secondary club competition qualifying round draw takes place on the final Friday of January (12:00 GMT), where Nottingham Forest could be drawn against either the Turkish side or Panathinaikos.

"It's more than the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these players to do well as a unit, the entire team," said manager Sean Dyche.

"This is another step, but it is a good step."

Forest Analysis: Jesus Catches Eye as New Signing Watches On

Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in European competition this season with six of his eleven strikes coming in the tournament.

This double also means he has scored a trio of strikes in his previous two outings and the prospect of competition for his place in attack could be providing motivation.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was last week brought in temporarily and he was watching this match from the directors' box.

This development may well have been on the striker's mind as he was impressive against the opposition, delivering two excellent finishes and generally being a menace to the visitors' defence with his pace and runs.

The forward was not alone in catching the eye, with James McAtee producing his best performance in a Forest jersey since signing from Manchester City last summer, while Dan Ndoye also performed well.

Such positive showings will give Forest some fresh hope as they turn their attention to pulling further away from the Premier League relegation zone when they welcome Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"All you can ask for is a reaction," added Dyche.

"I've never questioned their work ethic or their loyalty or integrity. It is just go and show your ability.

"James was excellent and Dan was incredibly lively. Jesus got another couple and these are positive indicators."
