Japan's Economy Declines as Exports Face Impact by American Trade Duties
Japan's economy has recorded a decline for the initial time in six quarters, primarily caused by falling exports due to newly imposed US tariffs.
G7 Growth Leaderboard
Japan stands as the initial G7 economy to disclose an GDP decline in the previous quarter.
As the US still needing to publish its gross domestic product data for Q3 2025, the current Group of Seven economic rankings indicate:
- France: 0.5 percent expansion
- UK: +0.1%
- Canadian economy: +0.1% (provisional estimate)
- Germany: 0%
- Italy: 0%
- Japanese economy: negative 0.4 percent
Travel Shares Decline amid Political Dispute with China
Alongside the GDP decline, Japan is dealing with an escalating diplomatic tension with China concerning Taiwan.
Stocks in Japan's travel and consumer businesses have declined sharply after China urged its nationals to refrain from traveling to Japan.
This decision by Beijing escalated a diplomatic feud that was triggered by comments from Tokyo's recently appointed PM about the possibility of deploying troops in the case of a hypothetical Chinese invasion on Taiwan.
The situation led to a surge of selling across Japan's leisure stocks.
- Oriental Land shares fell by 5.7%
- The department store chain tumbled by 11.3 percent
- Japan Airlines declined by 3.75%
"The China-Japan tension over Taiwan and Beijing's advisory advising against travel to Japan introduces short-term headwinds for retail and hospitality sectors.
"Tourists from China represent roughly 25 percent of Japan's inbound traffic, making retail outlets, high-end shopping, and tourism services particularly vulnerable."
Economic Decline Details
Japanese GDP fell by 0.4 percent in the July-September quarter, as industrial exports were impacted by duties levied by the United States this year.
Overseas shipments were a primary factor of the contraction, dropping by 1.2% compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5% lower than a year ago.
Previously, the American government had threatened Japan with a new 25% tariff on its goods, which was later lowered to 15 percent when the two nations concluded a trade agreement.
Private demand also declined, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's GDP contracted by 1.8 percent in the quarter through September.
"Japan's economy was strong in the first half of this year and today's GDP data showed that growth is paused temporarily.
I expect Japan's economy to be returning on a gradual recovery trend going forward."
The US administration has recently acknowledged the effect of tariffs on US consumers, reducing tariffs on food imports including beef, tomatoes, beverages and fruits amid increasing concerns about increasing costs.
