Meteorologists are saying a frosty commencement to the new year, with snowfall anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Proceed Despite Warnings

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's postponement. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those partying, so warmer clothes will be essential," noted the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and open skies. Temperatures are due to be low, so warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Commuting is expected to be affected.
• The public are advised to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.

Readings Set to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Alerts Released

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this signified the weather could to lead to significant impacts across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in security, wrapping up warm is absolutely essential.
