A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
