The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
His passing follows less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
