The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and characteristic occasions – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of multiple weeks, the American president started showing the public his intentions for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and increasing, and presently a study projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have dared – truly, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking major areas of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom have business with the government.

As disorienting as it is to observe the president try to upend the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this change developed at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans could have minimal awareness of him because they identify as skeptics or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; however I believe that exist valuable insights of great price in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly definitely not the story of an authoritative monarch appearing; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a different country to evade secret police. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his teaching is about love for fellow humans, particularly for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to violence is to present the additional cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his crime policy states that when a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer them your pullover as well.
The apparent and clear fact that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a type of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith rather a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest of Us
So I have been inspired to observe the persistent defiance to Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided substantial consolation to help build the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired electorate to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags during all protests and calls to the finest aspects in US history.

The country is optimally secured, in other words, by reference to the highest about American history, just as Christianity is most protected by relationship to what makes it special and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus.
