This Household Unofficial Video Game of the Year List for This Year
So, what did you think of 2025 in your household? Did it seem entirely positive as people post on online? Overflowing with A-grades for the kids and riotous costume birthday parties for the parents? Maybe it felt like a ocean of frustration with only rare fun highlights? Could any part be actually real, or is everyone now digitally altered virtual entities with celebrity dental work?
I've corralled everyone for a reflection, willing or unwilling, to reflect on the most important thing in a calendar year: what titles we played the most. So here goes:
Release Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"This isn't my personal ranking."
In the mobile realm, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In real life."
Game Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He seemed insulted that I even asked. Point taken.
Game Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into drama school, but when she took a break from vocals, she was playing Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where her avatar has a thriving utopia with far better healthcare than her big sister has in the real world.
Title the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and ended it at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Release I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Every time I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he protests, I reply that I am engaging in this to toughen him up so he can mature and play games for adults. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Skilled Gaming Family Member of the Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is unstoppable. Superior than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you wake up one day and understand it is all just an attempt to lure you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a classic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could deal with my problems so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I'm unwilling to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just didn’t have the time or headspace to give it what it required earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I will be playing this in the wee small hours after appropriate hospitality.
Title That Kept Me Sane When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was the previous year's surprise hit, but I was late to it. And it is remarkable. It just gets every single thing right. Its gameplay loop is a brilliant concept, but the powers behind the different wild cards are so creative it has become a game I could play constantly. Add in the wittiness of the card design, and this is an definite high-water mark of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Game I Got the Most Flak For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a bit of backlash when I critiqued how a specific bug in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I appreciated even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the individual who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I present that as written, because I acknowledge the engagement, and he is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a bastard-hard exploration-focused thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". What a joy. I acknowledge that it looks ace and is flawless if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my mid-fifties. I was around back when all games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was okay when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming Controversy of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that sparked debate, and expensive game releases. Both ethically dubious and repugnant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Crazy Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names bellowed from the garden at tea time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or doomscrolling, but it aches like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the past.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
