Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the hit series wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Will the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren’t being guided by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.
“There are some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
